Gene Townsend Indian

Gene Townsend and Ed Kretz at Langhorne

Indian racing legend and AMA hall-of-famer Ed Kretz at Langhorne. Gene Townsend provided some pit support for some of Kretz' east coast races.

Gene on 1940 Chief at Shop

My grandfather, Gene Townsend, in front of his "new" shop in New Salem (just off of Rte 40 between Brownsville and Uniontown) on his favorite Chief ... his blue 1940 Bonneville Chief (this bike is still running and is in the area). This picture was taken in the early 1940s when he moved the shop from Brownsville.

1910 Merkel

1910 Merkel Headstock area

showing the original transfer with the "Merkel-Light Motor Co. Pottstown PA USA" still clearly visible. The diamond shaped emblem in the middle is a stylized "M-L".

1910 Merkel Left side

This is an interesting motorcycle design for several reasons. First, the front fork is actually a telescopic design with springs in the main fork tubes.

1910 Merkel Right side

Second the bike actually has a full swing-arm type rear suspension with the pivot on the same shaft as the pedal crank and the springs in side of the diagonal frame tubes which end just at the nose of the saddle.

Thirdly, there is a clutch operated by a left hand handlebar lever. And belt final drive. Four features found on to-day's "modern" motorcycles. The engine has the "automatic inlet valve" where engine suction on the downstroke opens the valve. Only the exhaust valve is mechanically operated by a cam. The engine is the usual overhead inlet- side valve exhaust type.
